Dobby is....Free?

Appearances?

I love his shoes!
Dobby the House Elf was originally owned by the Malfoy family. His first appearence in "Harry Potter" was in the 2nd book, "The Chamber of Secrets" Where he showed up in Harry's bedroom, warned him about a "Danger" and then proceeded to use a hover charm on one of Aunt Petunia's puddings (which got Harry in trouble...woopsies.) After Harry refused to not go to Hogwarts, Dobby bewitched the Platform entrance and hexed a bludger.
Later Dobby was freed by Harry's Sock (His now favorite Item of clothing) and saved Harry from Lucious Malfoy's killing curse.

He then returned in, "The Goblet of Fire" to give Harry some Gilliweed for his 2nd Challenge, and to work in the Hogwarts kitchens.
Dobby appears a third time in "Order of the Phoenix," showing Harry the hidden Room of Requirement, which Harry uses for his Dumbledore's Army meetings. When Umbridge finds out about the meetings later, Dobby enters the room to warn the group to leave.
In the 6th Book, Dobby follows Draco Malfoy under Harry's Orders, and tells Harry that Draco is "A bad boy!" Dobby also manages to get into a fight with Kreacher, much to Peeves the Poldergeists amusement.

In the seventh movie/book, Dobby saves Olivander, Luna, Dean, Griphook, Harry, Hermione and Ron from the imprisonment of Malfoy Manor. He also (in the movie) helps to capture Mundungus Fletcher. We must honor Dobby for his dedication, for he lost his life, trying to help Harry Potter. The best we can say about this, is at least he died saving someone he admired, and at least he died, in a beautiful place, with his friends surrounding him....but most of all, at least he died free.

"Such a beautiful place to be with friends...Dobby is glad to be with friends...Harry..Potter."

Birthday: June 28th (JKR, 1998).
Died: March, 2005 (DH23).

Name meaning possibilities:
1) A dobby is a part of a loom that allows geometric textures to be woven into piece of fabric. Can also refer to the fabric itself.
2) 'Dobby" is also used in parts of Yorkshire and Lancashire to mean a Brownie (a benevolent goblin or elf).

Appearance
Dobby has huge, green, tennis ball-sized eyes and a long thin nose like a pencil. He is quite short, like all house-elves, coming only up to Harry's belly button.

Clothing during slavery: An old pillowcase, with rips for arm- and head-holes.

Clothing after independence: A tea cozy for a hat, on which he had pinned a number of bright badges; a tie patterned with horseshoes over a bare chest, a pair of what looked like children's soccer shorts, and odd socks.  One was the black one Harry had removed from his own foot, the other was covered in pink and orange stripes. Ron gives him a maroon sweater that his mom made and in Book 5, Dobby began wearing all the hats (2-3 ft. high), scarves and socks that Hermione knitted for the house-elves (OP18) because the others found Hermione's attempts to free them "insulting."
